Microsoft announces that the Skype messaging application will be retired in May 2025 and recommends migration to Microsoft Teams.
Launched in 2003, Skype was one of the applications that became very popular among users who preferred to communicate with their friends, family or business environment by voice. It also offered the possibility of making calls to landline and mobile phones at very low rates or with a monthly flat rate.
Thus, on 10 May 2011, Microsoft decided to buy Skype and replace its defunct instant messaging service, Live Messenger, for the sum of 8.5 billion dollars.
However, Skype’s popularity did not grow as expected as competing applications such as WhatsApp, Telegram and other messaging apps from already popular social networks such as Messenger, etc. gained ground. In recent years, Skype has been largely abandoned and only a few users use it.
